Are person-centered planning teams and IEP teams the same?

Person-centered planning teams and Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams are not the same because they serve different purposes and are guided by different philosophies. A person-centered planning team focuses on the individual as a whole, emphasizing their preferences, strengths, and personal goals. It seeks to create a plan that revolves around the individual’s needs, aspirations, and the support required to achieve those goals.

In contrast, an IEP team is specifically designed for students eligible for special education services. The IEP team formulates an educational plan that outlines specific goals, accommodations, and services that the student needs to succeed in their educational setting, as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The IEP process is centered around meeting educational requirements and ensuring compliance with federal laws.

While both teams aim to support individuals with disabilities, their focus and the context in which they operate differ significantly, thus establishing that they are not the same.
